Cape Northumberland Lighthouse: A Historical Icon Undergoing a Refurbishment

Cape Northumberland Lighthouse, located in the southeastern corner of South Australia, is a historical icon that has been guiding ships safely through the treacherous waters of the Bass Strait for over a century. Built in 1882, the lighthouse has a rich history and is a popular tourist destination known for its stunning views and natural beauty.

Currently, the lighthouse is undergoing a refurbishment to ensure it continues to operate efficiently and safely. The refurbishment includes the repair and restoration of the lighthouse’s stonework, windows and metalwork. Protective shrink wrapping has also been installed by Tufwrap Australia, a Australian-based company, to ensure that the lighthouse is protected from the elements during the restoration process. Visitors can still climb to the top of the lighthouse to enjoy panoramic views of the ocean and the nearby towns of Portland and Mount Gambier, while learning about the history of navigation in Australia’s southern waters. The lighthouse is surrounded by a nature reserve that is home to a variety of native plants and animals, including kangaroos, wallabies, echidnas, and a wide variety of bird species, making it a must-see destination for anyone visiting southeastern South Australia. The refurbishment of the lighthouse ensures that this historical icon will continue to shine brightly for many years to come.
